Science Fair projects in microbiology using electric pulses to kill microbes

High energy Pulsed Electric Fields ( PEF ) have been used for several years in the purification of processed fruit juices, milk, water, and other liquids. These processes use high voltages and short duration pulses because the liquids are flowing at a high velocity, due to the large volumes being processed. Current literature on the subject explains that lower voltages can be used if the number of pulses is increased and the volume is lowered.   • The effect of waveform on killing specific microbes. Several cultures of a specific species of microbe would be subjected to different electrical wave forms to determine the effect that the waveform might have on that microbe. since waves, triangle waves, sawtooth waves ( positive and negative ), and square waves at the same voltage would be applied to different cultures of the microbe and the effects compared.

Several cultures of a specific species of microbe would be subjected to different frequencies using a specific waveform and voltage to determine the effect that the frequency might have on that microbe at the same voltage would be applied to different cultures of the microbe and the effects compared.
  • The effect of voltage on killing specific microbes. Several cultures of a specific species of microbe would be subjected to the same frequency using a specific waveform and a range of voltages to determine the effect that the voltage might have on that microbe at the same frequency would be applied to different cultures of the microbe and the effects compared.
  • The effect of time on killing specific microbes.   • The microscopic determination of the systemic destruction of microbes when low voltage electrical pulses are applied. Using high speed photography, the changes in cellular structure under the influence of electrical pulses and frequencies can be observed.
