Are there other vitamins that we are being given the wrong forms of?

CHOLECALCIFEROL INFO

For years, we were pounded with bad information about Vitamin D and have been deprived of the correct amounts for optimum health and lifespan. We have been told for many years that all we needed was about 200 IU a day and that amounts over 500 or 600 IU would be harmful. It is now well established that 2000 to 3000 IU is safe and beneficial without monitoring. Amounts over 3000 IU daily should be checked with routine blood tests. The proper form of Vitamin D is D3 (cholecalciferol) and taking proper amounts of vitamin D3 results in improved health overall including better bone and dental strength and significantly reduced risk of cancer. If you have dental cavities, then you are probably deficient in Vitamin D.

Taking 2000 to 3000 IU daily of vitamin D3 during winter months will significantly reduce your chance of catching a cold or the flu and will significantly reduce your chances of other viral illness and will reduce your risk of cancer. Many people take as much as 10,000 IU daily during winter month without any negative effects. It is important to monitor your blood levels when taking large amounts of D-3.

Long-term high dose vitamin D well tolerated

A research letter published in the October 26, 2009 issue of the American Medical Association Journal Archives of Internal Medicine revealed that treatment with 50,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D per week was safe and effective over an 8 week period, and could also be safe to use every other week as maintenance.

According to a paper, all infants in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) received dangerously high doses of Vitamin D every three months in their doctor's office. The policy was in place for 35 years. The first 600,000 IU dose was given at three months and then every three months until the child was 18 months of age. This works out to an average of 6,000 IU per day (actually, for several technical reasons it is not equivalent) for 18 months. The authors collected blood before the dose and then 2 weeks after the quarterly dose to obtain 25(OH)D, 1,25(OH)D, and calcium levels on a total of 43 infants.

A couple of things that I will note about this. East Germany had one of the lowest levels of infant mortality in the world despite being economically deprived. It was so low that they were accused of manipulation the data and hiding deaths. The second thing that I will point out is the fact that for its size of less than 17 million, East Germany dominated the Olympics during the 1960's, 1970's, and early 1980's when these kids were reaching adulthood. Do you remember what these guys looked like? They were huge, big boned, and strong. East Germany was believe to be pushing steroids? Yes, vitamin D is basically that.

East Germany in Summer Olympics

1968 25 medals 9 Gold Ranked 5th
1972 66 medals 20 Gold Ranked 3rd
1976 90 medals 40 Gold Ranked 2nd ( Above the U.S.)
1980 126 medals 47 Gold Ranked second ( Boycotted by the U.S. )

A combination of these two vitamins, Niacin and Cholecalciferol, can significantly reduce the cost of health care in the U.S. and around the world.

Other important Vitamins that we are being deprived of

Another example is Vitamin B12. Almost all vitamin manufacturers provide cyanocobalamin, calling it vitamin B12. Unfortunately, the form that the human body needs is methylcobalamin and this is the only form that can get to the brain, where it is most needed. The body can also use HydroxyCobalamin better than CyanoCobalamin.

When you buy vitamin E in the store, you almost always get alpha-tocopherol which is synthetically manufactured. This is only one of seven forms of vitamin E and all seven are important. Among the most important and hardest to obtain is gamma tocopherol. You will find this form and others in vitamins labelled as providing "mixed tocopherols and tocotrienols".

Vitamin A also has multiple forms, all of which are beneficial. Alpha, beta, and gamma carotene as well as beta-cryptoxanthin are plant based forms that can be used by the body and retinyl ester is obtained from animal sources. Most vitamins contain the synthetic versions retinyl acetate or palmitate. The problem with the synthetic forms is that they may not provide other benefits that are obtained from the natural forms such as anti-oxident activity.
